Perry Maxwell originally designed the Championship Course that opened for play in 1936. In 2019, Gil Hanse restored the championship course to reflect Maxwell's original vision. The West Nine course, designed by Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw, opened for play in 1992. Southern Hills has hosted 17 major golf tournaments.
